Do You Have Mushrooms Growing In A Circle On Your Lawn?!

Fairy rings might sound like a magical thing but lawn owners know they can be a real nuisance! If you see mushrooms growing in a circular pattern on your lawn don’t worry! It’s not the work of fairies! But these fungi are a living organism with an intricate network under the ground. They can be tough to get rid of once they start growing. The mushrooms take valuable nutrients from the ground that your grass needs to be healthy! This can result in brown, ugly grass circles.  Although prevention is the best technique, here are some ways you can get rid of them once they have already cropped up:

  1. Preventative Measures.

If mushrooms pop up in your grass but not in a circle you may have time to just remove the mushrooms either by mowing or hand picking them. Remove tree debris like roots, thatch, bark, etc. Aerate the soil well and water the lawn excessively. Putting manure and fertilizer on the grass will help supply the affected grass with the nutrients it needs. Watch for more mushrooms and keep removing them if they show up. If they don’t stop growing then you may need to try drowning them out. If you don’t have any mushrooms yet still do the above to prevent mushrooms from growing later in the season. A well fertilized, aerated, and watered lawn is a happy lawn!

  1. Drowning Them Out.

The other option is to try and drown the fungus out. To do this you need a deep root feeder, a pitch fork, or any other tool that can make deep holes so that the water can get down deep in the soil. Then, water the grass a lot. Still use fertilizers such as manure and remove the mushrooms as soon as they pop up. If the drowning doesn’t work then your last option is to do a complete overhaul.

  1. Complete Overhaul.

Remove all of the soil and grass that are affected. Make sure you get it all, Sometimes you’ll have to dig down deep to get all of affected area. Then put new soil and fertilizer and plant new grass seeds or put in sod. It isn’t pleasant but it should do the trick!
